“ELEK TEY” – Electrifying Water Transport for Better Livelihoods

THE QUESTION

Can using electric motors provide clean and cheap water transport in Casamance, Senegal?

LOCATION: Senegal
SECTOR: Transportation
TECH: Solar Energy
TIMELINE: December 2021 - July 2023

The Challenge

In Casamance, Senegal, there are rural communities living on inland islands who are dependent on boats for fishing and transport. Unfortunately, the cost of fuel is extremely high, with fuel costs representing 25% of fisherman’s daily income. Petrol is unsafe and hard to access, as it is stored in glass bottles at informal depots at various riverside locations. Additionally, the petrol-engine boats pollute an already fragile environment and disrupt wildlife with the engine’s loud noise.

The Idea

This pilot will explore whether electric motors can provide an alternative to water transport for piroguiers that is cheaper, greener and safer than the current combustion engines. Silent motors will enhance wildlife conservation and increase appeal for eco-tourism, boosting local tourism economies. Additionally, electric motors need less maintenance and are more cost effective over the lifetime.
