THE QUESTION

Can an AI-powered software improve access to healthcare in remote areas of Peru?

The Challenge

Due to deep-rooted centralisation, many Peruvians outside of Lima face major challenges in accessing healthcare. There is a lack of necessary infrastructure and equipment, only 14% of primary care entities are properly equipped, and a notorious shortage of medical staff nationwide, with an estimated deficit of 73,345 medical workers. The gap in access to healthcare has significant negative effects on economic, social, and cultural livelihoods. Furthermore, 37% of Peru’s population suffers from chronic diseases, which is a highly vulnerable group that faces adversity and marginalisation in receiving necessary healthcare.

The Idea

This pilot will utilise existing cutting-edge software, Avatr, to alleviate long-standing challenges for accessing healthcare in remote areas. The Avatr software collects and analyses data provided by a patient to understand the patient’s demand-led needs, circumstances and preferences in time-and-place. With this insight, Avatr’s AI recommends best-fit matches for services aligned to treating the patient, in reference to their profile and social context. The system provides tailored communications and automated interactions to strengthen patient engagement and care plan compliance. This pilot will partner with the National Social Insurance Scheme in Peru to establish three hospitals as geographic focal points in rural areas to test the usefulness of the Avatr software across a wide range of terrain and physical challenges in Peru.
