In the context of challenging geographic terrain in Ethiopia with many areas having very deep-lying underground water levels combined with multi-year droughts as well as enduring humanitarian challenge, the FT Hub is responding to demand signals from key stakeholders around challenges related to the sourcing and securing safe water supply in vulnerable regions across the country. To address the most at-risk, vulnerable populations, the Hub is additionally interested in addressing WASH in humanitarian contexts, where the impacts of WASH challenges are exacerbated.

In Ethiopia, the FT Hub has been engaging with the FCDO and key stakeholders within the humanitarian and development sectors to identify challenges in WASH in the country, particularly in the humanitarian sector. Two key challenges have emerged as being top priorities for stakeholders:

  1. Limited access to reliable water supply and the difficult monitoring of water supply levels particularly in drought-prone regions and areas having very deep-lying underground water levels.

  1. Lack of live data monitoring systems to identify where there are damages to WASH infrastructure and whether WASH facilities remain operational

We are seeking a WASH specialist to:

  1. Undertake a market and landscape analysis,

  1. Make recommendations of specific evidence-supported, demand-led WASH use cases for frontier tech intervention.

  1. Co-facilitate a validation and refinement workshop leading to the verification of specific use cases for solution design to be addressed with frontier solutions in a future phase of work.

The FT Hub will prioritise local or regional consultants who have extensive experience in the WASH Sector in Ethiopia, but international consultants are welcomed.

We anticipate that there may be various scopes of work available throughout the FT Demand-Led innovation process exploring technologies for addressing access to reliable water supply for vulnerable communities in Ethiopia and invite applications from WASH technical consultants who can potentially commit to a longer-term engagement with FT Hub WASH exploration in Ethiopia.
