Frontier Tech Hub Newsletter #9

Welcome to the latest issue of the Frontier Tech Hub’s monthly newsletter. This month, we have a wide range of updates from across the Hub, including information about how tech sector partners all over the world might be able to support FCDO in our latest call for applications.

FCDO staff are submitting their ideas for innovative applications of frontier tech to solve global challenges right now. Can you help them?

Whilst the opportunity to apply to our programme is open only to FCDO staff, we often need to help source technical partners who can collaborate with them to deliver their innovative ideas globally. We’re therefore always looking to increase our database of sector contacts who might be able to support our pilots around the world.

As a Network member, you’re already in our database. But can you help us connect to the cutting edge of other frontier tech sectors by recommending 3 innovative companies anywhere in the world? We’re interested in 3-D printing, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, the Internet of Things, Drones, and more.

You can either respond to this newsletter with your recommendations or forward our Network web page to your most innovative frontier tech contacts so that they can sign-up to hear more about this opportunity and others from Frontier Tech Hub.

Watch a video about how our Ideas Generation Workshops have been inspiring FCDO staff to apply to be pioneers

We believe that playfulness, brainstorming, and testing are important ingredients for innovation. With that in mind, our in-person and virtual Ideas Generation Workshops have been giving would-be pioneers the opportunity to experiment, ideate, and play in the hope that we might spark an idea with merit that we could then support.

Read a summary of our research into the future of frontier technology in development!

Take a look at how we’re exploring the future of frontier technology in development. We’ve collaborated with FCDO and external experts to surface 8 megatrends that will shape the next 7 years of technological development, considered what impact this will have on how we do development, and surfaced emerging use-cases that will shape the future of our work. You can read more about our learnings on the report at the bottom of this webpage.

How can we enable safe drone use and unlock their potential for impact?

The UAV Peer Action Group convened in Frankfurt On 30th-31st March for a Kick-Off Event. Government representatives from Benin, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mauritania, Rwanda, and Senegal joined the two-day event to explore how they can enable safe drone use and thus unlock the potential for impact through regulation. We were impressed by the level of engagement and richness of the discussions, and there seemed genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity for peer learning. The Frontier Tech Hub will be adapting its coaching offer to this regulatory space alongside partners at the Drones Doing Good Alliance, and is excited to launch experiments with a number of participating countries during the next quarter.
