Submissions Open: AI4GBV reporting and support services 

The Frontier Tech Hub is exploring the potential of Artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help support survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Malawi, specifically through the provision of a mobile chatbot that can provide survivors and/or community victim support units with psychosocial support, access critical information and referral to support services.

The Frontier Tech Hub is commissioning a rapid research study to review how technology is currently being used to support GBV survivors to navigate and access support services in Malawi or similar contexts, identify barriers and challenges faced by GBV survivors including the most marginalised and identify those barriers or challenges which a mobile technology solution might help address.  

The idea is at an early stage of formation and the selected Research Partner will therefore play a pivotal role in shaping the design of a pilot that builds on existing knowledge of how AI tools can be used to empower survivors and improve coordination across service providers.  The primary objective of this research is to map key barriers and challenges in the Malawi context with a focus on the most marginalised, explore existing similar solutions in Malawi, East Africa or similar contexts, synthesise lessons learned, and provide recommendations to inform the design and development of a mobile based tool fit for the Malawian context.  

We are seeking an experienced researcher with knowledge of GBV prevention and support programming and relevant networks in Malawi for the following scope of work:
