CLOSED: Stakeholder research exploring the potential of an AI tool for the legal sector in Malawi
In partnership with the Frontier Tech Hub, the FCDO are exploring the use of generative AI tools to transform access to justice in Malawi. Many Malawians struggle to obtain timely legal representation and support due to high case backlogs, which in part may be due to staffing and resource constraints facing the Legal Aid Bureau. Therefore, a product that improves efficiency for staff at the Legal Aid Bureau could have a large impact in helping Malawians access justice.
We are seeking an independent technical expert/s to help understand and refine this problem statement. The research will involve engaging with diverse stakeholders, including judges, Malawi Legal Aid Bureau staff, and university students, to gather comprehensive insights on the factors affecting high case backlogs in Malawi, and identify whether and how generative AI technology could help address these challenges – for example through the development of an AI-driven legal assistant. The research should assess the demand, feasibility, and potential impact of potential technical solutions. The goal is to identify whether there are potential solutions which are likely to be feasible, contextually appropriate, that address the root causes of the identified problems, and that align with the needs of the intended user groups. Finally, it is hoped that the research will generate an understanding of the different models of delivery for potential solutions, including the business models that may be acceptable or align with existing behaviours.
